THE WEAVING ROOM IS Open!

Weaving students at work

The new Weaving Room at Bluster Bay Woodworks is a working weaver's studio as well as relaxed space where we are pleased to offer weaving classes. Whether you are a brand-new weaver or more experienced, we have a class for you! Be inspired, have fun, and gain the confidence you need to tackle any project.

Learn to weave for the first time, or explore specific weaves and strcutures in intermediate and advanced classes. Can’t find exactly the class you need? We also offer private instruction.

Instructor Kristie Sherrodd has taught weaving since 1989 in studio, workshop and university settings. She tailors projects to the experience of the class participants and provides lots of individual attention to each student.

The Weaving Room at Bluster Bay also offers looms, weaving equipment and yarn for all your weaving projects.

Currently the Weaving Room is open by appointment only. For more information contact Kristie by phone at 208-263-4600 or by email or read further for course descriptions and a list of upcoming classes.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Each weaving class includes lecture, discussion, informative handouts, careful study of woven examples, drafting practice on paper, and extensive sample weaving. All students are welcome, from those with no weaving experience to advanced weavers who want to fill in gaps and enhance weaving and designing skills.

Weaving class fees are all-inclusive (instruction, materials, handouts, and the use of looms and other equipment).

Weaving in the Bluster Bay Weaving Room

Very Beginning Four-Shaft Weaving

Become a weaver! In this class, designed for brand new weavers, you will weave your first project start to finish while learning how how to use a shaft loom. It is offered as either an intensive weekend workshop or over a five-week period.

Instruction covers equipment and the weaver's vocabulary, warping, reading drafts and figuring yarn requirements. We’ll explore the many patterns possible with a simple twill threading, and get to know wool as a weaving fiber.

Hands-on practice emphasizes how and why things work. You will also learn techniques for achieving smooth selvedges and an even beat. Lecture, handouts, and class assignments provide each student with a solid foundation. The basic weave structures are illustrated with sample weaving, and the completion of a beautiful and useful wool scarf provides a wonderful sense of accomplishment.

This is only the beginning of your weaving adventure!

Course fee: $145.00 includes all materials and use of a loom and other equipment.

Beginning Weaving II

The weaving adventure continues! Designed for students who have already taken a Very Beginning Handweaving class or who are advanced beginner weavers. Explore the amazing variety of twill-based weaves possible on a four-harness loom. Students will build upon knowledge gained in a very beginning class, learning to read and thread a more complicated draft, handle more than one color in the warp, work with cotton yarns and additional weaving techniques and tips, and finishes.

During the 16-hour course each student will weave 2 different, beautiful and useful cotton hand towels.
Prerequisites for this class include knowing how to read a draft and how to warp a loom (although we'll briefly review both topics).

Cost: $145.00 includes all materials and use of a loom and other equipment.
